Homes for adults who cannot live alone

Family Type Homes for Adults (FTHA) | NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS)

How it works

Family-Type Homes for Adults (FTHA) are state-licensed residential homes for adults who need support with daily living but don’t need medical or nursing care. Think of it as a home-like setting with the extra help you need.

Who are FTHAs for?

Adults who can’t live independently on their own and need support with daily tasks.

What does an FTHA provide?

  • Furnished room
  • Three meals a day, plus an evening snack
  • Help managing medications
  • Help with personal finances
  • Personal care assistance (bathing, dressing, grooming)
  • Supervision and social support
  • Housekeeping and laundry

How does an FTHA work?

  • Located throughout NYC
  • 1-2 family homes with no more than four residents
  • Private homes or apartments run by licensed providers
  • Residents can attend programs, day centers, and community activities

How much do FTHAs cost?

  • Costs vary
  • Private pay residents can negotiate rates directly with the provider
  • Residents using SSI or Public Assistance pay rates set by Social Security Administration
