Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) | NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD)

1. How it Works

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) connects NYC youth 14-24 years old with paid job experience and career exploration opportunities each summer.

  • Apply to SYEP each spring.
    • The application for SYEP will only be available during that time.
    • You can apply online or get help from a community-based organization during the application period.
    • Selection is based on a lottery.
  • SYEP offers:
    • Work readiness training
    • Project-based learning
    • Financial literacy training
    • Paid summer jobs
  • Work is available for youth with disabilities.

2. Determine your eligibility

You may be eligible if you can answer yes to these questions.

  • Do you live in New York City?
  • Are you 14-24 years old?

Take a short survey to see if you might be eligible for this or 30 other programs.

3. What you need to include

You do not need to submit documents with your application. You will only need to submit documents if you are selected from the lottery.

You will need to provide the following unexpired documents:

  • Social Security Card
  • Proof of who you are
  • Proof of where you live
  • Proof of your income

You may also need:

  • Proof of work eligibility (working papers) if you are age 17 or younger.
    • You can working papers from your school.
  • Proof of your disability status if you have a disability.
  • Proof of Selective Service registration if you are a male age 18 or older.

For each person applying, any one document:

  • Driver license or official photo ID
  • Birth certificate
  • IDNYC
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card for dependents
  • Social Security Card or ITIN
  • Baptismal or other religious certificate
  • Marriage records
  • Medicaid card
  • Naturalization certificate
  • Official birth records
  • Official school records
  • Adoption records
  • Other official record showing birth date

Proof of your income

Proof of work eligibility

Proof of your disability status

Proof of your Selective Service registration
