Reduced MTA fares for eligible riders

MTA Reduced-Fare Program | Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)

1. How it Works

Reduced fares are available for riders who are 65 or older or riders who have qualifying disabilities.

This table shows the reduced fares that you’ll pay:

Transit type Reduced fare When
Subways, Staten Island Railway, and local, limited, and Select Bus Service Buses $1.45 All times of the day
Express bus trips $3.50 Anytime except during weekday peak periods (6-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.).
Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad Up to 50% off the full one-way peak fare Anytime except weekday mornings from 6 to 10 a.m. (if traveling in the direction of NYC terminals). See more info about railroad fares, including reduced fares.

 

2. Determine your eligibility

You’re eligible if you are aged 65 or over, or have a qualifying disability including:

  • Receiving Medicare benefits for any reason other than age
  • Serious mental illness and receiving Supplemental Security Income
  • Blindness
  • Deafness or hearing loss
  • Ambulatory disability
  • Cognitive disability
  • Other physical disability

3. What you need to include

You will need one of these forms of ID to apply:

  • Valid driver’s license (or legal equivalent) from any state
  • Valid passport from any country
  • IDNYC
  • Birth certificate + photo ID
  • Medicare card + photo ID
  • Valid state photo ID

Apply by mail

  1. Download and complete an application.
  2. Include a passport-style photo – 2 inches by 1.5 inches.
  3. Include a copy of a valid ID as proof of age.
  4. For riders with disabilities, include documentation of a qualifying disability.
    • A list is on page 5 of the application. An examiner will review this and might contact you for more information.
  5. Mail your application and documents to:

Apply in person

Apply in person at:

  • Customer Service Centers at select subway stations. They are located in accessible stations and open 24/7.
  • The Customer Service Center at 3 Stone St in Lower Manhattan on weekdays.
  • Mobile Sales vehicles when they visit your neighborhood.

If you have a disability, you also need to bring documentation of your disability. A list is on page 5 of the Reduced-Fare application for people with disabilities.

If you’re 65 or older, you can sign up in person and get your new Reduced-Fare OMNY card the same day. If you have a disability, you can get in-person, individualized assistance.

Reduced-Fare MetroCard customers

  • Call 511, say “MTA,” then say “Subway and Buses” and follow the prompts.
  • You can also use your preferred relay service provider or the free 711 relay if you need.
  • If you ride Bee-Line or NICE buses, you should continue to use your Reduced-Fare MetroCard until OMNY is available on these services. If you need a Reduced-Fare MetroCard to ride Bee-Line or NICE buses, call 511.
